NEW YORK – The New York Knicks, facing a challenging period without key player Mitchell Robinson, displayed a remarkable balance in their gameplay to secure a 136-130 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night.
Julius Randle spearheaded the Knicks’ effort with an impressive 34 points, while Quentin Grimes, contributing a season-high 19 points, and RJ Barrett, adding 27 points, were instrumental in the win. The Knicks’ adaptability was put to the test as they adjusted their lineup in the absence of Robinson, who suffered a stress fracture in his left ankle requiring at least eight weeks of recovery.
Jalen Brunson also played a crucial role, scoring 21 points and dishing out nine assists. Despite losing Robinson, the NBA leader in offensive rebounds, the Knicks demonstrated their depth and resilience. Randle acknowledged Robinson’s importance but remained optimistic about the team’s ability to adapt.
The game was intensely competitive until the fourth quarter when the Knicks’ bench players, notably Grimes and Josh Hart, propelled the team forward. Grimes’ critical three-pointer and Hart’s scoring streak during a 7-0 run broke the tie and pushed the Knicks to a 115-108 lead. Their continued efforts extended the lead, with Hart finishing the game with 16 points.
Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau praised the bench unit’s performance, emphasizing the need for collective effort and synergy, especially in the absence of reserve guard Immanuel Quickley due to knee soreness.
The Raptors, despite a season-high 29 points from OG Anunoby and significant contributions from Scottie Barnes, Pascal Siakam, and Dennis Schroder, who each scored 20 points, could not withstand the Knicks’ offensive surge. Anunoby noted the game’s high-scoring nature and the tough shots made by the Knicks.
The Knicks, coming off losses to Eastern Conference leaders Milwaukee and Boston, showed their capability to bounce back strongly. They now face a series of road games, starting with a trip to Utah, before returning to Madison Square Garden later in December.
Jericho Sims started at center for the Knicks, with Isaiah Hartenstein continuing his role with the second unit. Hartenstein delivered a solid performance with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Sims contributed seven rebounds.
The Raptors, facing their fourth consecutive loss, two of which were against New York, now look forward to hosting Atlanta for a two-game series.
This victory for the Knicks underlines their depth and resilience in overcoming injury setbacks and maintaining a competitive edge, setting a positive tone as they embark on their upcoming road trip.
