OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Thunder clinched a decisive 134-120 win over the Utah Jazz on Monday night, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 30-point performance leading the charge. The Thunder’s efficiency and teamwork were on full display as they shot 52% from the field and tallied 35 assists.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who also contributed seven assists, demonstrated his ability to balance scoring and playmaking, a skill he continually strives to refine. Josh Giddey complemented this effort with a well-rounded game, scoring 12 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out eight assists in just 24 minutes. His adaptation to the Jazz’s defensive tactics, which included making himself more available around the hoop, was crucial to his success.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault praised Giddey’s evolving game and also highlighted Ousmane Dieng’s significant contribution off the bench. Dieng scored a season-high 18 points on efficient shooting, validating the experience gained during his time with the G League affiliate Oklahoma City Blue.
Chet Holmgren also played a key role, adding 16 points and eight rebounds, as the Thunder secured their fourth win in five games, solidifying their position in the Western Conference standings.
The Jazz, on the other hand, struggled without their leading scorer, Lauri Markkanen, who missed his eighth straight game. Keyonte George, a rookie from Baylor, stepped up with a season-best 30 points, while Collin Sexton added 20 points, and Simone Fontecchio scored a season-high 19. However, Jordan Clarkson, Utah’s second-leading scorer this season, was limited to just eight points on 3-for-13 shooting.
The Thunder established a commanding lead by halftime, with Isaiah Joe’s corner three-pointer at the buzzer stretching the lead to 66-52. The third quarter saw the Thunder shooting an impressive 65% from the field, further extending their lead to 111-75, thanks in part to Gilgeous-Alexander’s perfect shooting during the period.
Gilgeous-Alexander emphasized the team’s approach of not underestimating any opponent, regardless of their record, stating that any team in the NBA can be formidable on any given night.
Looking ahead, the Jazz will host the New York Knicks on Wednesday, while the Thunder are set to visit the Sacramento Kings on Thursday.
This game highlighted the Thunder’s collective strength and the standout performances of their young core, while the Jazz, still adjusting to the absence of Markkanen, will look to regroup in their upcoming fixtures.
