In Memoriam: Hartland Monahan (1951-2023)

The hockey world is mourning the loss of one of its notable players, Hartland Monahan, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 72. Monahan, renowned for his time in the NHL and as the son-in-law of the legendary Bernie “Boom Boom” Geoffrion, left an indelible mark in the world of professional hockey.

Monahan’s journey in the NHL began when he was selected in the fourth round (No. 43) of the 1971 NHL Draft by the California Golden Seals. Over his career, spanning from 1973 to 1981, Monahan played a total of 334 games across six NHL teams, including the New York Rangers, Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, and St. Louis Blues, in addition to the Golden Seals.

During his eight-season tenure in the league, Monahan amassed an impressive 141 points, comprising 61 goals and 80 assists. The pinnacle of his career was the 1976-77 season with the Washington Capitals, where he notched an NHL career-high of 50 points (23 goals, 27 assists) in 79 games, showcasing his skill and tenacity on the ice.

Beyond his NHL career, Monahan’s sporting legacy continued through his family. His son, Shane Monahan, pursued a career in Major League Baseball, playing two seasons for the Seattle Mariners in 1998 and 1999.

After retiring from professional hockey, Monahan settled in suburban Atlanta, where he transitioned to a managerial role at the United Parcel Service. His contributions to hockey were not forgotten in his hometown of Laval, Quebec, where an arena was named in his honor in 2014, celebrating his contributions to the sport and his community.

Monahan’s death is a significant loss to the hockey community. He was a player who exemplified dedication, skill, and sportsmanship on the ice. His connection to hockey royalty, being the son-in-law of Hall of Famer Bernie Geoffrion, further highlights the deep roots and passion for the sport within his family.

His journey from the NHL draft to a distinguished career across various teams, and his post-retirement life, paint the picture of a man deeply devoted to his sport and his community.

Monahan’s memory will live on in the hearts of hockey fans, his family, and all those who had the privilege of witnessing his career. His life and career serve as a testament to the enduring spirit and resilience that define the world of professional hockey.
