Paris Saint-Germain managed to secure their place in the Champions League knockout stage despite a 1-1 draw against Group F winners Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

In a match marked by missed opportunities from both teams, Karim Adeyemi broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, giving Dortmund the lead after capitalizing on a lost possession by PSG. Adeyemi’s goal, slotting the ball in off the post, added pressure to the visitors, who needed a positive result to ensure their progression in the competition.

PSG responded quickly, with Warren Zaire-Emery finding the equalizer just five minutes later, following an assist from Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe himself had a goal disallowed for offside in the 76th minute after a VAR review.

The first half was surprisingly goalless, despite multiple golden chances created by both sides. PSG gradually grew into the game, with efforts from Lee Kang-in and Mbappe, while Bradley Barcola and Randal Kolo Muani also came close for the visitors.

Dortmund had their share of opportunities, with Marco Reus forcing a save from PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Adeyemi missing an open goal chance before halftime.

Dortmund, having already qualified for the knockout stages, topped the group with 11 points. PSG’s draw placed them second on eight points, level with third-placed AC Milan, who will continue their European campaign in the Europa League. Newcastle United finished the group stage with five points.

PSG defender Marquinhos emphasized the importance of qualifying and the need to prepare well for the upcoming challenges in the knockout stage. He acknowledged the team’s focus on improving their away performance after losing their previous two away matches in the group.

The draw was a relief for PSG, ensuring their progression in the Champions League despite not securing the top spot in the group. Dortmund, on the other hand, maintained their strong form in the competition, finishing as group leaders. The match was a showcase of missed chances and tight margins, with both teams demonstrating their attacking prowess but falling short in conversion.
