DETROIT — Jared Goff led the Detroit Lions to a commanding 42-17 victory over the Denver Broncos on Saturday night, keeping their playoff hopes alive and strong. Matching his career-high, Goff threw five touchdown passes, with three going to rookie tight end Sam LaPorta, as the Lions demonstrated their offensive prowess.
The NFC North-leading Lions (10-4) are now eyeing a playoff berth for the first time since 2016. A victory in their division, which they haven’t secured since 1993, would enable them to host a playoff game, a significant milestone for a franchise with only one playoff win since their 1957 NFL title.
“Our superpower is how we respond as a team,” Goff said, highlighting the team’s resilience. The Lions, rebounding from recent setbacks, dominated the second quarter with touchdown passes to LaPorta, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Amon-Ra St. Brown, leading to a comfortable 21-0 halftime advantage.
The Broncos (7-7), whose playoff aspirations were dented with this loss, had won six of their previous seven games. Despite quarterback Russell Wilson’s call for continued belief, the Broncos struggled offensively, managing only 75 yards in the first half and failing to convert on third downs.
Denver’s challenges were compounded by a negated touchdown due to an offside penalty on offensive lineman Quinn Meinerz, followed by a heated exchange between coach Sean Payton and Wilson. Wilson, who lost a fumble early in the game, ended with 223 yards, a touchdown pass, and a rushing score.
Goff, conversely, was flawless, completing 24 of 34 passes for 278 yards without a turnover. He joined Houston’s C.J. Stroud as the only quarterbacks to throw for five touchdowns in a game this season. LaPorta’s achievement as a rookie tight end was particularly notable, with over 70 receptions, 700 yards, and nine touchdowns.
St. Brown contributed significantly with seven catches for 112 yards and a score. The Lions also showcased a strong running game, with Gibbs and David Montgomery combining for 185 yards.
The Lions demonstrated they are formidable during prime-time games, moving to a 4-0 record at night this season.
Detroit could also clinch a playoff spot on Sunday, depending on the outcomes of games involving the Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay, and Atlanta.
