INDIANAPOLIS — Quarterback Gardner Minshew delivered an exceptional performance, propelling the Indianapolis Colts to a crucial 30-13 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday. With this win, the Colts improved their playoff positioning significantly.

Minshew, stepping in for the injured Anthony Richardson since Week 5, matched his career-high with three touchdown passes, throwing for 215 yards. This victory marked the Colts’ (8-6) fifth win in six games, lifting them to the No. 7 spot in the AFC. Despite losing key players like Michael Pittman Jr. and Zack Moss to injuries and Jonathan Taylor not playing, Minshew’s leadership was evident.

The Steelers (7-7), led by backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky, initially took a 13-0 lead. However, Indianapolis responded with 30 consecutive points, showcasing their resilience and depth. Trubisky, replacing the injured Kenny Pickett, finished with 169 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. The Steelers’ struggles continued as third-string quarterback Mason Rudolph took over in the fourth quarter.

“We’ve needed to win these games and we’ve done a great job down the stretch,” said a relieved Minshew.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin expressed frustration over the team’s performance, acknowledging their fundamental shortcomings and the need for improvement.

The Colts’ comeback began with touchdown passes from Minshew to Moss and D.J. Montgomery, the latter being promoted from the practice squad earlier in the week. A quick touchdown pass to Mo Alie-Cox in the second half extended their lead, followed by three field goals from Matt Gay.

Trey Sermon led the Colts’ ground game with 88 yards on 17 carries, stepping up in the absence of Taylor. “I think everybody has to kind of pick up their level of play,” Minshew said, commending the team’s collective effort.

The game had a tense moment when Steelers safety Damontae Kazee was ejected for a dangerous hit on Pittman, who later was diagnosed with a concussion.

Injury Report:

  • Steelers: Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick left the game due to a knee injury.
  • Colts: Zack Moss did not return after his touchdown due to an arm injury. DT Eric Johnson II also left with a possible lower-body injury.
