COLUMBUS — Jack Hughes put on a stellar performance for the New Jersey Devils, notching a hat trick, including his 100th NHL goal, in their 6-3 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Saturday. Hughes’ third goal, scored into an empty net, marked his 101st career goal and secured the Devils’ commanding victory.

Tyler Toffoli and Nico Hischier also contributed significantly to the Devils’ (16-11-1) offense, each recording a goal and an assist. Jesper Bratt provided vital support with three assists, highlighting his chemistry with Hughes and Toffoli on their line. Goalie Akira Schmid backed up the Devils’ offensive surge with 23 saves. The Devils have been on an impressive run, winning eight of their last 10 games.

For the Blue Jackets (10-17-5), Yegor Chinakhov continued his scoring streak, notching a goal for the fourth consecutive game. Kirill Marchenko and Alexandre Texier also found the back of the net, but their efforts were not enough to overturn the Devils’ lead. Daniil Tarasov, making his season debut, made 24 saves for Columbus.

Columbus coach Pascal Vincent acknowledged the challenges posed by the Devils, citing their offensive prowess and speed in transition as key factors in the game. Hughes set the tone early, scoring just 47 seconds into the first period, capitalizing on a turnover by Johnny Gaudreau.

The Devils’ coach, Lindy Ruff, emphasized the importance of starting strong, which Hughes managed to do effectively. Erik Haula doubled the Devils’ lead later in the first period, while Marchenko cut the deficit early in the second period. However, Toffoli extended the Devils’ lead again, only for Chinakhov to make it a one-goal game.

Hughes reached his 100th career goal milestone in the second period on a 4-on-3 power play, demonstrating his skill and impact on the team. Hischier’s goal in the third period further extended the Devils’ lead before Texier scored late for Columbus.

NOTES:

  • Hughes’ first goal was his fastest in an NHL game, beating his previous record against the Blue Jackets.
  • His hat trick was his second in the NHL, with the first occurring against the Washington Capitals.
  • The win marked Lindy Ruff’s 850th regular-season victory, moving him up to fourth in NHL coaching history.
  • Jesper Bratt extended his point streak to seven games, accumulating 11 points in that span.
  • Johnny Gaudreau’s assist on Marchenko’s goal was his 700th NHL point.

The Devils will look to continue their strong form, while the Blue Jackets aim to bounce back in their upcoming games.
