TEMPE, Ariz. — The Arizona Coyotes secured a 2-0 victory against the Buffalo Sabres at Mullett Arena on Saturday, backed by a stellar performance from goalie Karel Vejmelka, who made 28 saves. This win marks the Coyotes’ second consecutive shutout, following their 1-0 triumph over the San Jose Sharks the previous day.
Clayton Keller and Liam O’Brien scored the goals for the Coyotes (15-13-2), who are demonstrating significant improvement compared to last season. “Obviously it’s tough when you have back-to-back games, so this was great for us,” Vejmelka said, acknowledging the team’s defensive efforts.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, in goal for the Sabres (13-16-3), made 20 saves but was responsible for a turnover that led to Keller’s goal. Buffalo coach Don Granato expressed frustration over missed opportunities, as the Sabres failed to capitalize on several quality chances.
The Coyotes’ victory was underlined by Vejmelka’s fifth career shutout and his first since January of the previous season. Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny praised Vejmelka’s determination and performance, especially after a challenging stretch without a win since late October.
The Coyotes have now won seven of their last 11 games and have surpassed their performance from the same stage last season. “We’re a super young team and we’re learning,” Keller said, emphasizing the team’s focus on consistency.
Keller scored in the second period following Luukkonen’s error, with Alex Kerfoot providing the assist. O’Brien extended the lead in the third period after intercepting a pass in the Arizona zone, highlighting the Coyotes’ effective counterattacking play.
The Sabres, shut out for the second time this season, were unable to break through Arizona’s defense, despite creating several scoring opportunities. “We need to move forward as a team,” said Buffalo forward Casey Mittelstadt, emphasizing the need for continued effort and improvement.

- This shutout marked the second time in Coyotes history they have achieved shutouts on consecutive days.
