NASHVILLE, TN — In a dramatic overtime finish, the Houston Texans secured a 19-16 victory against the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium on Sunday. Ka’imi Fairbairn’s 54-yard field goal as time expired in overtime was the decisive moment, capping off a resilient performance by the Texans, who improved to 8-6.
The Texans, contending for a playoff spot, showed remarkable fortitude, winning without several key players, including injured quarterback C.J. Stroud. Backup quarterback Case Keenum, making his first start since Week 17 of the 2021 season, overcame an early interception and four sacks to throw for 229 yards and a touchdown. His leadership was crucial in helping Houston outgain the Titans 340-204.
Running back Devin Singletary was instrumental in the Texans’ offense, rushing for 121 yards. Although his 34-yard touchdown run in overtime was nullified by a holding penalty, it set the stage for Fairbairn’s game-winning kick.
The Titans, now 5-9, were eliminated from playoff contention, suffering their second consecutive losing season under coach Mike Vrabel. Rookie quarterback Will Levis, who was sacked seven times, had to leave the game late in overtime with a leg injury but indicated postgame that he should be okay.
Fairbairn’s return from injury proved timely for the Texans, as he contributed field goals of 23, 27, and 53 yards before his game-winner. Keenum’s touchdown pass to Noah Brown tied the game at 16, forcing overtime.
The Texans’ victory also spoiled the Titans’ tribute to their Oilers heritage, as the team donned throwback uniforms and celebrated former greats, including Earl Campbell and Billy “White Shoes” Johnson.
Injuries were a factor for both teams. Texans safety Jimmie Ward left early for a concussion evaluation and did not return, while the Titans lost cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting and tight end Trevon Wesco to injuries during the game.
Looking ahead, the Texans, hopeful for Stroud’s return, will host the Cleveland Browns on December 24. The Titans, looking to recover from this setback, will continue their home stand against the Seattle Seahawks on the same day. For the Texans, this victory represents a significant boost in their quest to end their playoff drought and solidify their standing in the AFC South.
