CHARLOTTE, NC — In a strategic and tightly contested game, the Carolina Panthers edged out the Atlanta Falcons 9-7, thanks to a last-second 23-yard field goal by kicker Eddy Pineiro. The win came amid a constant downpour on Sunday, delivering a significant blow to the Falcons’ playoff aspirations.

The Panthers’ interim head coach Chris Tabor demonstrated immense confidence in Pineiro, instructing running back Chuba Hubbard to intentionally avoid scoring a touchdown and having quarterback Bryce Young take a knee to set up the field goal. The decision paid off as Pineiro calmly executed the kick, pushing Carolina’s record to 2-12.

Atlanta, now 6-8, faces an uphill battle for a postseason berth, especially after New Orleans and Tampa Bay both won, improving to 7-7. The Falcons had led 7-6 and were driving for additional points when quarterback Desmond Ridder’s pass was intercepted by Panthers safety Xavier Woods, setting the stage for Carolina’s game-winning drive.

Ridder finished the game with 152 yards, one touchdown, and a crucial interception. The Falcons’ offense also suffered a setback with a fumble by Bijan Robinson in the second half.

For the Panthers, Young threw for 167 yards, and Hubbard added 87 yards on 22 carries. The final drive, a 17-play, 90-yard effort, took 7:35 off the clock and showcased Young’s potential as he led the Panthers efficiently down the field.

The Falcons initially took the lead in the second quarter with Ridder’s 56-yard pass to Jonnu Smith, followed by a 2-yard shovel pass touchdown to Cordarrelle Patterson. Carolina responded with two field goals by Pineiro, narrowing the gap to 7-6 before the dramatic final drive.

The Panthers’ win snapped a six-game losing streak, offering a morale boost for the team and its fans. The sparse crowd, with tickets selling for as low as $4, witnessed a defensively dominant game from both sides.

Carolina’s defense was particularly effective, causing turnovers and pressuring the Falcons’ offense throughout the game. The Panthers’ Adam Thielen dropped a potential touchdown pass, but Pineiro’s consistency with field goals kept them in the game.

The Falcons will look to recover from this loss as they host the Indianapolis Colts next Sunday, while the Panthers will welcome the Green Bay Packers. For Carolina, this victory is a testament to their resilience and strategic play, offering a glimpse of hope in an otherwise challenging season.
