LOS ANGELES — The New York Knicks, spearheaded by Jalen Brunson’s late-game heroics, secured a 114-109 victory against the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night. Brunson’s 29 points, including 11 crucial points in the fourth quarter, were key in overcoming LeBron James’ 109th career triple-double.
Julius Randle contributed significantly with 27 points and 14 rebounds, while Immanuel Quickley added 20 points. The Knicks demonstrated resilience in the final quarter, holding off a Lakers rally led by James to notch their second road win over Los Angeles in 2023.
LeBron James, despite recording a triple-double with 25 points, 11 assists, and 11 rebounds, couldn’t steer the Lakers to victory. They have now lost three of their last four games, following their triumph in the inaugural In-Season Tournament. Anthony Davis added 32 points and 14 rebounds, but Los Angeles struggled to capitalize on key opportunities in the closing stages.
In the game’s critical moments, James scored consecutive baskets to cut the Knicks’ lead to four points. However, Randle’s timely three-pointer and a subsequent dunk following a missed three-pointer by James ensured the Knicks maintained their lead.
James’ achievement of his second triple-double of the season and being the only player with a triple-double in his 21st NBA season remains a highlight for the Lakers. Austin Reaves also stood out with 20 points, and the team welcomed back Davis, D’Angelo Russell, and Cam Reddish from injuries.
For the Knicks, Randle’s strong first-half performance and Brunson’s three 3-pointers underscored their determination to bounce back from a recent loss to the Clippers.
Before the game, the Lakers celebrated their In-Season Tournament victory with the unveiling of a banner at their arena. This modest black banner, recognizing their unbeaten run and victory over Indiana, was placed next to the Minneapolis Lakers championship banners in a less prominent position compared to Los Angeles’ gold title banners.
Looking ahead, the Knicks face a matchup against Brooklyn on Wednesday, while the Lakers will travel to play against Chicago on the same day.
