OKLAHOMA CITY — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s impressive 30-point performance guided the Oklahoma City Thunder to a dominant 116-97 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night. The win came just before the Grizzlies anticipate the return of their star point guard, Ja Morant, from suspension.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who also grabbed nine rebounds, continued his stellar form, playing a significant role in keeping Oklahoma City in second place in the Western Conference standings. His effort came on the heels of a game-winner against Denver and included making 13 of 14 free throws.
For the Grizzlies, who suffered their fifth consecutive loss, there’s a ray of hope with Morant’s expected return. Suspended for the first 25 games following an incident involving a handgun during a livestream, Morant is slated to rejoin the team for their next game at New Orleans. Last season, Morant had impressive averages of 26.2 points, 8.1 assists, and 5.9 rebounds across 61 games.
Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins indicated that Morant is physically fit and ready to play significant minutes, although they plan to be mindful of his adjustment to NBA game shape.
The Thunder’s victory also highlighted the contributions of rookie Chet Holmgren, who tallied 17 points, seven blocks, and six rebounds. Holmgren’s defensive prowess was notable, with 15 blocks over the last two games. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault praised Holmgren’s fearlessness and competitive nature, particularly in challenging rim shots.
Josh Giddey’s double-double, featuring 16 points and 12 rebounds, further bolstered Oklahoma City’s performance. The team has won four of their last five games, demonstrating their growing cohesion and effectiveness.
The Grizzlies, facing challenges with several players out, including guards Marcus Smart and Derrick Rose, struggled to find their rhythm. Ziaire Williams led Memphis with 19 points, while Desmond Bane added 17. Jaren Jackson Jr., who had been on a scoring spree in recent games, was limited to 11 points. Memphis’ shooting woes were evident, as they managed only 35.3% from the field.
The Thunder established their dominance early, leading 68-53 at halftime, driven by Gilgeous-Alexander’s 17 points and Holmgren’s defensive presence. They further extended their lead in the third quarter, holding Memphis to a mere 2-for-19 shooting.
Looking ahead, the Grizzlies face a crucial game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday, while the Thunder host the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.
