Forest Green Rovers have announced a significant change in their coaching structure, appointing Troy Deeney as the new Head Coach. This announcement follows the mutual departure of David Horseman and Louis Carey after a lackluster start to the 23/24 season.
Deeney, who transitioned to Forest Green Rovers as a Player Coach from Birmingham City earlier this season, steps into his new role with immediate effect. Known for his decade-long tenure and captaincy at Watford, where he was instrumental in the team’s promotions to the Premier League in 2014-15 and 2020-21, Deeney brings a wealth of experience to the position.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the appointment, Deeney said, “I am very pleased and honoured to be appointed as the new Head Coach. We will work our very hardest to bring this wonderful club back to success.” He promised transparency and dedication in addressing the club’s challenges and is set to announce his backroom team shortly.
Dale Vince, Chairman of Forest Green Rovers, expressed gratitude to Horseman and Carey for their contributions and underscored the need for a decisive change. “We’re at the halfway mark of the season and need to act decisively to improve our performances and league position,” Vince stated, affirming his confidence in Deeney’s ability to lead the team forward.
Vince also hinted at strengthening the squad in the upcoming transfer window to bolster the club’s chances in League Two, with an eye towards future advancements to League One.
Deeney’s first test as Head Coach will be a home game against Gillingham on Friday, December 22. His appointment marks a new chapter for Forest Green Rovers, with hopes high for a turnaround in the team’s fortunes under his guidance. The club and its fans eagerly await this new era, looking to Deeney to bring his leadership, experience, and passion to the forefront in navigating the challenges ahead.
