MIAMI, United States – In a significant announcement for basketball in the Americas, the FIBA Regional Office and the Nicaraguan Basketball Federation confirmed that the 20th edition of the FIBA AmeriCup will be held in Managua, Nicaragua. The premier basketball event for senior men’s national teams in the Americas is scheduled to take place at the Polideportivo Alexis Argüello from August 23 to 31, 2025.
The qualifiers for the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 are set to occur in three phases: February 2024, November 2024, and February 2025. As the host nation, Nicaragua gains automatic qualification for the tournament. The competition for the remaining qualification spots promises to be intense, with the best two teams from Group C – Canada, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico – set to join Nicaragua.
Moreover, the top three teams from each of the other groups will also secure their places in the tournament. These groups include Group A (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela), Group B (Brazil, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay), and Group D (Bahamas, Cuba, Puerto Rico, USA). In total, twelve teams will compete in the 2025 edition of the FIBA AmeriCup.
FIBA Americas President Fabián Borro expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event. “The FIBA AmeriCup is the most prestigious basketball competition for senior men’s national teams in the Americas,” Borro said. He acknowledged Nicaragua’s role in successfully hosting the finals of the Basketball Champions League Americas a few years ago and expressed confidence in Managua’s capability to make the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 an epic event.
The announcement is particularly momentous as it marks the first time in the tournament’s history that it will be held in Managua. The previous edition of the FIBA AmeriCup in 2022 saw Argentina triumph over host Brazil. With the stage set for a historic event in Nicaragua, the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 is expected to attract basketball fans from across the region and the world, promising an exciting and competitive tournament.
