NEWARK, N.J. – Timo Meier’s two goals, including a third-period equalizer, propelled the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 comeback win against the Detroit Red Wings at Prudential Center on Saturday. Tyler Toffoli’s decisive goal in the third period sealed the victory for the Devils.
Meier, who has been in top form, contributed significantly to the Devils’ (17-13-2) win, ending their three-game losing streak. “We were focused on making smart decisions and playing tight,” Meier said. Goalie Vitek Vanecek’s 22 saves were also crucial in the win.
Patrick Kane continued his goal-scoring streak for the Red Wings (16-14-4), and Michael Hutchinson, making his debut for Detroit, made 33 saves. “We put in a great effort but just fell short,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said.
Kane’s snap shot in the first period gave Detroit an early lead. However, Meier’s first goal tied the game for the Devils. Shayne Gostisbehere then put the Red Wings ahead in the second period, only for Meier to equalize again in the third. Toffoli’s goal, a redirection from Jesper Bratt’s shot, provided the winning margin for New Jersey.
“Toffoli’s goal was a result of our persistence and creating chances,” said Devils coach Lindy Ruff. “We made better decisions tonight and handled the game well.”
Detroit faced challenges with injuries, as forward Christian Fischer and defenseman Jeff Petry collided and did not return to the game. “Despite being shorthanded, our team showed great effort,” Lalonde said.
Notable performances included Simon Edvinsson’s season debut for Detroit and Ruff’s milestone of surpassing Peter DeBoer for third place in franchise wins for the Devils.
The Red Wings’ Patrick Kane extended his goal streak to three games, with four goals and eight points in his last four games. For New Jersey, their 11 comeback wins this season highlight their resilience and ability to turn games around.
This victory is significant for the Devils, demonstrating their capacity to recover and secure wins in tight situations. The Red Wings, despite their strong showing, will look to build on their performance and address their late-game issues.
