COLUMBUS – Auston Matthews’ two goals and an assist powered the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-1 victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Saturday. Matthews’ performance extended his personal goal streak to seven games, showcasing his offensive prowess.
Matthews, the NHL’s leading goal scorer with 28 goals, has been a key figure for Toronto (17-8-6), contributing significantly during his scoring streak. “I’m just focusing on staying present and taking advantage of my opportunities,” Matthews said.
William Nylander also had a strong showing with a goal and two assists, extending his point streak to 11 games. John Tavares scored for the Maple Leafs as well, while Mitchell Marner contributed two assists. Goalie Martin Jones made 27 saves, helping Toronto bounce back from two consecutive losses.
For Columbus (11-18-6), Justin Danforth scored, and goalie Daniil Tarasov made 26 saves. Despite the loss, the Blue Jackets played a competitive game. “We had our chances, but Toronto was strong defensively,” said Columbus defenseman Erik Gudbranson.
The game was marked by a scary moment when Columbus forward Sean Kuraly was injured after being checked by Matthews and Toronto defenseman Jake McCabe. Kuraly was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. “It was a concerning moment for everyone,” said Columbus coach Pascal Vincent.
Matthews gave Toronto an early lead with a one-timer, assisted by Marner. Danforth’s goal tied the game for Columbus early in the second period. Tavares then regained the lead for the Maple Leafs with a skillful spin move and shot, and Matthews’ power-play goal in the third period further extended their advantage. Nylander’s short-handed goal sealed the win for Toronto.
Tavares praised Matthews’ impact. “It’s impressive how he continuously finds ways to score, despite being heavily marked,” he said.
The game also saw several milestones. Matthews became the first player with at least 27 goals in his first 30 games of a season since Jaromir Jagr in 1996-97. Johnny Gaudreau extended his point streak for Columbus, and Blue Jackets defenseman Damon Severson returned after missing 15 games due to injury.
For the Maple Leafs, this win was crucial to maintaining their competitive edge, while the Blue Jackets will aim to build on their positive aspects despite the setback. Both teams will look to carry forward their experiences from this matchup into the rest of the season.
