The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, officially known as the TotalEnergies 2024 Africa Cup of Nations for sponsorship purposes, marks the 34th edition of this prestigious biennial African association football tournament. Organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the tournament is set to be hosted by Ivory Coast, marking the country’s second hosting since 1984.
Originally scheduled to occur during the Northern Hemisphere’s summer to avoid scheduling conflicts with European football, the tournament faced a postponement to January 13 – February 11, 2024, due to concerns about the adverse summer weather in Ivory Coast. Despite the change, the tournament retains its original 2023 designation for sponsorship reasons.
Ivory Coast, which last hosted the event nearly four decades ago, has embarked on significant infrastructure developments, including the renovation and expansion of existing stadiums and the construction of new ones across five host cities. The tournament is expected to take place in six stadiums with minimum capacities set at two for 40,000, two for 20,000, and two for 15,000 spectators. Key venues include the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan (60,000 capacity), Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Yamoussoukro (33,000 capacity), and the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké (40,000 capacity), among others.
Senegal enters the tournament as the defending champions, having triumphed in the previous edition. With 24 teams competing, this event promises to be a vibrant showcase of African football talent, passion, and cultural richness.
The tournament’s preparation also extends beyond the playing fields, with the Ivory Coast government ensuring the development of training facilities and accommodation in the host cities. This includes the construction of 96 villas and a three-star hotel in Korhogo, underlining the nation’s commitment to delivering a world-class footballing experience.
With all eyes set on Ivory Coast in early 2024, the Africa Cup of Nations is poised to not only celebrate the best of African football but also to demonstrate the continent’s growing prowess in hosting major international sporting events.
