In a gripping showdown at TD Garden, the Boston Celtics narrowly escaped with a 128-122 overtime victory over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night, extending Detroit’s historic losing streak to 28 games.

The Pistons, desperate to avoid equaling the NBA’s longest losing streak held by the “Trust the Process” Philadelphia 76ers, showcased a surprising burst of energy in the first half. Detroit established a commanding 21-point lead, displaying a level of play uncharacteristic of their recent performances. Yet, the Celtics, exhibiting their top-tier status, methodically chipped away at this deficit.

As the game entered its crucial stages, the Pistons, trailing 106-100 in the final two minutes of regulation, found an unlikely hero in Jaden Ivey. Ivey’s scoring spree, culminating in six consecutive points, revitalized Detroit’s hopes. Bojan Bogdanovic then delivered under pressure, sinking a crucial putback with just 4.6 seconds remaining, pushing the game into overtime.

Overtime, however, belonged to Boston. Derrick White, in a stunning display of clutch performance, racked up 10 of his 23 points in the extra period. Kristaps Porzingis, who ended the night with an impressive 35 points, dominated both ends of the court. His pivotal contributions included a spectacular dunk off a full-court assist from Jayson Tatum and crucial free throws that stretched Boston’s lead to 125-117.

The Celtics’ victory was further bolstered by Tatum’s standout performance, featuring 31 points and 10 assists. His leadership and playmaking were instrumental in Boston securing its fourth consecutive win and ninth in the last 10 games.

Despite the loss, Detroit’s Cade Cunningham was a beacon of hope, delivering 31 points and nine assists. Ivey’s double-double (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Jalen Duren’s 15 points and 14 rebounds were also highlights for the Pistons, who are showing signs of emerging from their slump.

This game marked another chapter in Detroit’s challenging season, as they had previously set the record for the most consecutive losses in a season with 27, following a defeat to Brooklyn.

Looking Ahead

The Pistons now face a crucial home game against Toronto on Saturday night, a matchup that presents an opportunity to halt their record-tying losing streak. Meanwhile, the Celtics continue their campaign, hosting Toronto on Friday night, looking to maintain their momentum in the league.

This enthralling contest between the Celtics and Pistons not only showcased the resilience and potential of a struggling Detroit team but also highlighted the unwavering competitiveness of Boston, a team firmly establishing itself as a powerhouse in the NBA.
