The Portland Trail Blazers secured a closely contested 134-128 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night, capitalizing on the absence of San Antonio’s rookie sensation, Victor Wembanyama. The win allowed the Trail Blazers to split the two-game series, bouncing back from their previous loss to the Spurs.

Jerami Grant and Malcolm Brogdon led the way for Portland, each scoring 27 points. Brogdon’s performance was complemented by seven assists, highlighting his dual role as a scorer and facilitator. Jabari Walker had an exceptional night, scoring a career-high 25 points, while rookie Scoot Henderson contributed significantly with 21 points, 11 assists, and seven rebounds.

Portland coach Chauncey Billups praised Henderson’s performance, noting it as probably his best game so far. Henderson’s skills were on full display, particularly with a notable wrap-around assist to Matisse Thybulle, which drew attention and praise from his teammate Walker.

On the Spurs’ side, Keldon Johnson put up a resilient fight with 27 points. Despite the absence of Wembanyama, who rested following an ankle issue earlier in the month, the Spurs remained competitive throughout the game. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich acknowledged the team’s struggle, especially in the face of Portland’s physicality and shot-making.

The Trail Blazers showcased their sharpshooting prowess, going 16 of 27 from the 3-point range, while the Spurs also had a solid night from beyond the arc, shooting 14 of 33. The first half saw the Trail Blazers establish a commanding lead, with Grant scoring 20 points and Henderson adding 11 points and seven assists. Portland capitalized on San Antonio’s turnovers, scoring 14 points in the process.

Despite a late push by the Spurs, cutting the lead down to five in the final seconds, the Trail Blazers held on for the win. Portland’s ability to win without key players like leading scorer Anfernee Simons, who missed his second straight game due to illness, highlighted their depth and resilience.

Looking ahead, the Spurs will host Boston on Sunday night, while the Trail Blazers face a challenging game against Phoenix on Monday night. This victory for Portland not only demonstrates their ability to bounce back after a loss but also underscores the depth and talent within their roster.
