TAMPA, Fla. — The NFC South division race will be decided in the final week of the regular season, following a crucial 23-13 victory by the New Orleans Saints over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This result leaves both teams tied at 8-8, highlighting the division’s unique position as the only one in the NFL without a team holding a winning record.

The Buccaneers, aiming for their third consecutive NFC South title, struggled offensively throughout the game. Saints quarterback Derek Carr outperformed his counterpart, Baker Mayfield, by throwing for two touchdowns without an interception. Mayfield, despite a recent upsurge in form, was under constant pressure, throwing two interceptions and being sacked twice.

Tampa Bay can still secure the division title with a win against Carolina in their final regular-season game. However, if the Bucs falter, the division title will go to the winner of the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons matchup.

Carr, with a completion rate of 24 out of 32 passes for 197 yards, led the Saints’ efficient offensive display. The Saints’ defense was equally impressive, intercepting Mayfield twice and forcing two fumbles.

The first half saw the Saints dominate, running twice as many plays as the Buccaneers and gaining a significant yardage advantage. Mayfield’s performance in the first half was limited, with most of his passing yards coming from a single 33-yard completion to Mike Evans.

The Bucs’ recent form, which saw them win four straight games, was not evident in this matchup. Running back Rachaad White expressed disappointment at the team’s lack of energy and the Saints’ early dominance.

The Saints played the second half without star running back Alvin Kamara, who suffered a sprained ankle. Despite his absence, the Saints maintained their lead and rebounded from their previous week’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

New Orleans Saints coach Dennis Allen praised his team’s mindset and resilience, highlighting their ability to handle tough situations effectively.

Injuries were a factor for both teams. The Saints lost Juwan Johnson, Nephi Sewell, and Landon Young during the game, while the Buccaneers were without Shaquil Barrett and Carlton Davis due to injuries sustained in the previous week.

Looking ahead, the Saints will host the Falcons in a pivotal regular-season finale, while the Buccaneers will face the Panthers with the division title and a playoff berth on the line.
