The Los Angeles Clippers continued their impressive form, defeating the Miami Heat 121-104 on Monday night, thanks to a strong performance from Kawhi Leonard in his return from injury. Leonard scored 24 points, while Paul George added 23, contributing to the Clippers’ third consecutive win and a successful start to the new year.
The Clippers, who had the best record in the West during December with an 11-2 run, benefited from Norman Powell’s 22 points off the bench and James Harden’s double-double of 15 points and 10 assists.
Leonard, coming back after a four-game absence due to a hip contusion, made a significant impact, reaching 13,000 career points with a dunk early in the fourth quarter. He ended the game with six rebounds and five assists, despite a slow start that saw him scoreless in the first quarter.
The Clippers managed to overcome a 14-point deficit, with Leonard scoring 10 straight points during a surge in the second quarter, helping his team to a narrow 59-58 lead at halftime.
The Heat, playing without key players including Jimmy Butler (foot), Josh Richardson (back), and Caleb Martin (ankle), were led by Bam Adebayo with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Kevin Love added 17 points off the bench, and Kyle Lowry, returning from a head contusion, contributed eight points.
Miami opened strong with Duncan Robinson and Love carrying the team to an early lead, but the Clippers’ third-quarter performance, outscoring the Heat 14-8, widened the gap. George’s back-to-back 3-pointers during an 8-0 run were crucial in maintaining their lead.
Looking ahead, the Heat will remain in Los Angeles to face the Lakers on Wednesday, while the Clippers are set to begin a three-game trip, starting with the Phoenix Suns.
The Clippers’ victory, fueled by Leonard’s scoring and George’s consistent play, highlights their depth and resilience, positioning them as a strong contender in the Western Conference.
