BOSTON, MA — The Boston Red Sox announced today that they have claimed right-handed pitcher Max Castillo off waivers from the Kansas City Royals. This latest move brings the Red Sox’s 40-man roster to its full capacity.
Max Castillo, a 24-year-old pitcher, appeared in seven games for the Royals in the 2023 season. During this time, he recorded a 4.43 ERA, allowing 10 earned runs over 20.1 innings pitched. His performance at the Triple-A level with Omaha last season showed similar stats, where he maintained a 4.58 ERA across 22 games, including 21 starts.
The Venezuela native began his professional baseball journey when he was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as an international free agent in 2015. Over his career in Major League Baseball, which includes stints with Toronto in 2022 and Kansas City from 2022 to 2023, Castillo has a cumulative ERA of 5.43 in 21 games, six of which he started.
In addition to his MLB experience, Castillo has also been active in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League this winter, playing for Cardenales de Lara. His impressive performance there includes a 5-0 record and a 2.72 ERA over 49.2 innings in 11 games, nine of which he started.
The addition of Castillo is seen as a strategic move by the Red Sox to strengthen their pitching lineup. The current 40-man roster now boasts a diverse group of 24 pitchers, reflecting the team’s emphasis on building a robust and versatile pitching staff for the upcoming season.
