The Capitals, led by Alex Ovechkin’s goal and Darcy Kuemper’s 33 saves, showcased a strong start, establishing a 4-0 lead in the first period.

Tom Wilson opened the scoring for Washington just 55 seconds into the game. Beck Malenstyn and Martin Fehervary added to the tally, with Fehervary’s goal leading to the substitution of Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry with Alex Nedeljkovic. Ovechkin’s power-play goal late in the first period further solidified the Capitals’ dominance.

Despite a late surge by the Penguins, including goals from Rickard Rakell, Sidney Crosby, and Jake Guentzel, the Capitals maintained their lead. Crosby’s goal marked a significant milestone, moving him past Joe Thornton for 12th in NHL history with 1,540 points.

The Penguins displayed resilience, outshooting the Capitals 30-11 in the final two periods. However, Kuemper’s stellar goaltending, especially in the closing moments, ensured the Capitals’ victory. The win signifies a positive turnaround for Washington, following a four-game losing streak, and underscores the intense rivalry between these two teams.
