BOSTON — In a high-scoring and intensely competitive match, Sidney Crosby’s late-game brilliance guided the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 6-5 victory against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Thursday. Crosby, who notched the go-ahead goal and added two assists, was pivotal in Pittsburgh’s recovery from an early deficit.
Crosby’s performance, highlighted by his game-winning power-play goal at 11:19 in the third period, came right after his selection to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game. The goal put Pittsburgh ahead after Brad Marchand’s short-handed goal at 3:08 had leveled the score for Boston. The game saw several momentum shifts, with Pittsburgh initially leading 5-2 early in the second period, only for Boston to rally back.
“Weird start with five [goals] in the first eight minutes, but some games happen like that,” Crosby reflected on the game’s unpredictable nature.
Kris Letang’s three assists, along with notable contributions from Lars Eller and Drew O’Connor, who each had a goal and an assist, were crucial in Pittsburgh’s victory. The Penguins (19-14-4) have now won six of their last eight games. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic made 24 saves, contributing to the team’s resilience.
For the Bruins (23-8-6), despite losing their winning streak, David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie each provided a goal and two assists, with Marchand scoring twice. Goalkeeper Jeremy Swayman made 29 saves in a game where defensive tactics were overshadowed by offensive prowess.
Boston coach Jim Montgomery expressed concerns about the team’s ice management and decision-making, highlighting the need for better control, especially in high-pressure situations.
The match started at a frenetic pace, with five goals scored in the first 7:21, setting the record for the fastest five goals to start a game this season. Both teams showcased their offensive strengths, with Pittsburgh eventually sealing the deal in the closing minutes.
Evgeni Malkin, playing his 1,100th NHL game, had one shot on goal for Pittsburgh, contributing to his impressive career tally. Marchand’s short-handed goal, a record 34th for his career with the Bruins, was a highlight for Boston, despite the final outcome.
Looking forward, the Penguins will aim to carry their winning momentum, while the Bruins will seek to regroup and address their strategic gaps.
