The Los Angeles Clippers exhibited a masterclass in defense and efficient scoring to defeat the New Orleans Pelicans 111-95 on Friday night. Paul George led the charge with six 3-pointers and 24 points, while Kawhi Leonard contributed 19 points and nine rebounds to the Clippers’ victory.
James Harden’s playmaking was instrumental, as he dished out 13 assists and scored eight points in 29 minutes. The Clippers’ cohesive effort saw them lead by as much as 31 points in the fourth quarter, marking their 14th win in 16 games.
Jonas Valanciunas and Jordan Hawkins were notable contributors for the Pelicans with 13 points each, but the team’s four-game winning streak came to an abrupt end. The Clippers’ defense particularly shone against New Orleans’ key scorers, Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson, limiting each to just 12 points. Williamson’s night was further marred by a right leg contusion, which, according to Pelicans coach Willie Green, is not serious.
Clippers coach Tyronn Lue praised his team’s defensive focus, noting the strategy to limit Ingram with quick double-teams and emphasizing the importance of taking the ball out of his hands early. This approach paid dividends, as the Clippers outscored the Pelicans 30-15 in the second quarter and led 56-41 at halftime, holding New Orleans to their season-low in points for a half.
George highlighted the advantage of playing alongside Harden and Leonard, who attract significant attention on the floor, often leaving him open for catch-and-shoot opportunities. “My job is easy at that point. I just finish the play that those guys created,” George said.
Coach Green acknowledged the Clippers’ aggressive and physical defense, noting that it disrupted the Pelicans’ game plan and left them a step slow.
Looking ahead, the Clippers will face the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena, serving as the visiting team in their shared home venue. The Pelicans will travel to face Sacramento on Sunday.
This victory not only showcases the Clippers’ defensive prowess and ability to execute a game plan effectively but also positions them as a formidable force in their upcoming matchups.
