LOS ANGELES — The LA Galaxy have announced the signing of Japanese international right back Miki Yamane from J1 League club Kawasaki Frontale, bolstering their defense for the upcoming MLS season.
Yamane, who has been contracted through the 2026 season, joins the Galaxy as a significant addition, especially following the signing of fellow Japanese defender Maya Yoshida last summer. His arrival strengthens the team’s defensive line, offering depth and international experience.
LA Galaxy’s General Manager Will Kuntz expressed excitement over Yamane’s joining, highlighting his impressive achievements in the J1 League and Emperor’s Cup, as well as his recognition as a three-time J1 League Best XI honoree. Kuntz emphasized the invaluable international experience Yamane brings, citing his performances in the AFC Champions League and the FIFA World Cup.
At 30 years old, Yamane has had a successful career in Japan, with a track record of 15 goals and 36 assists in 290 matches across all competitions. His international experience includes 16 caps for Japan and participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he demonstrated his capabilities on a global stage.
The Galaxy’s decision to acquire Yamane follows the departure of Calegari, whose 2024 contract option was declined. Additionally, the club has Mauricio Cuevas, a promising US youth international and academy product, to compete for the right back position.
The Galaxy are set to start their 2024 campaign with a highly anticipated home match against Inter Miami CF on February 25th. The match, which will be available on MLS Season Pass at 8:30 pm ET, marks the beginning of what promises to be an exciting season, especially as the Galaxy look to utilize their two remaining Designated Player spots alongside midfielder Riqui Puig.
Miki Yamane’s acquisition is a strategic move for the LA Galaxy, adding depth, versatility, and international experience to their squad as they aim for a strong performance in the 2024 MLS season.
