LOS ANGELES — The LA Galaxy have bolstered their goalkeeping lineup by signing veteran John McCarthy through the 2025 MLS season, marking a significant move in the inter-city transfer from LAFC.
McCarthy, known for his standout performances with LAFC, notably clinched the MLS Cup 2022 MVP for his remarkable penalty-kick saves coming off the bench. His career in the MLS, spanning eight seasons, includes stints with the Philadelphia Union, Inter Miami CF, and most recently, LAFC. During his tenure, he has accumulated 15 clean sheets in 68 regular-season games, showcasing his reliability and skill as a goalkeeper.
LA Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz praised McCarthy’s diverse experience, which ranges from the USL to being an MVP in an MLS Cup Final. Kuntz highlighted McCarthy’s role as a veteran leader who will enhance the depth and competition in the goalkeeper position for the Galaxy.
At 31 years old, McCarthy brings a wealth of experience to the Galaxy’s goalkeeping squad. He joins Jonathan Bond, the incumbent starter, and the promising young talent Novak Mićović, strengthening an essential area for the team. McCarthy’s availability as a free agent made the transfer an advantageous move for the Galaxy.
The Galaxy, looking to bounce back from a 13th-place finish in the Western Conference in the previous season, are set to start their new campaign on February 25th with a home match against Inter Miami CF. The match, scheduled for 8:30 pm ET, will be available on MLS Season Pass and marks the beginning of their quest for an Audi MLS Cup Playoffs return.
John McCarthy’s transfer to the LA Galaxy is a strategic addition, offering experience, proven skill, and depth to the team’s goalkeeping department as they aim for a stronger performance in the upcoming MLS season.
