The Brooklyn Nets found their winning ways again on Friday night, defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 124-115 and snapping a five-game losing streak that had marred their start to the new year. Spencer Dinwiddie and Nic Claxton led the charge with 23 points each, propelling the Nets to a much-needed victory.
Cam Thomas, breaking out of a 0-for-20 shooting slump, contributed significantly with 19 points, including a vital 16 in the first half. This performance helped the Nets establish a commanding 75-47 lead by halftime and maintain a 32-point advantage in the third quarter.
Dennis Smith Jr. also played a key role, with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists. “First win in ’24. You’ve got to start somewhere,” Smith Jr. said, highlighting the significance of the win against a strong Western Conference team.
For the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led with 34 points, nine assists, and six rebounds, despite the team’s overall struggles. Jalen Williams added 20 points, and Chet Holmgren contributed 17. The loss was a setback for Oklahoma City, who had previously been on a five-game winning streak.
The Nets’ victory marks a turnaround after a challenging period, including an 0-4 trip and two wins against Detroit in their previous 12 games. They displayed a dominant performance, surpassing 100 points in three quarters for the second time this season. Claxton’s 13 rebounds and Mikal Bridges’ 17 points were instrumental in this all-around team effort.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault acknowledged the Nets’ aggressiveness and control over the game. The Thunder had recently beaten the Nets on New Year’s Eve, concluding a successful December that saw Gilgeous-Alexander and Holmgren receive Western Conference player and rookie of the month honors, respectively.
Cam Thomas’ return to form was a highlight for the Nets, as he efficiently scored 6 for 9 in the first half. “That’s just the type of player that he is,” Claxton said of Thomas, emphasizing his scoring abilities.
The game also saw Lonnie Walker IV return for the Nets after a 17-game absence, although Cam Johnson exited with a hamstring issue.
Looking ahead, the Thunder will face Washington on Monday night, while the Nets are set to host Portland on Sunday. The Nets’ win not only ends their losing streak but also signals a potential resurgence as they continue to navigate the season.
