SAN JOSE, CA — The San Jose Earthquakes have confirmed the re-signing of Tommy Thompson for his 11th season with the club, extending his contract through 2024 with an option for 2025.
Thompson, 28, has been a staple figure for the Earthquakes since his MLS debut in 2014. Despite having his contract option declined after making 19 appearances last season, mostly as a substitute, Thompson has proven his value over time with the club. His record stands at 5 goals and 11 assists across 203 regular-season games, demonstrating consistent performance and versatility on the field.
Primarily known for his role as a right back, Thompson has faced competition for his position with Carlos Akapo and Paul Marie currently leading in the club’s depth chart. However, head coach Luchi Gonzalez has also utilized Thompson’s skills in midfield, highlighting his adaptability and importance to the team’s dynamics.
As the San Jose Earthquakes prepare for their second year under Gonzalez’s guidance, the team is bolstering its lineup. Recent acquisitions include midfielder Alfredo Morales from New York City FC and forward Preston Judd in a trade with LA Galaxy. These strategic moves indicate the club’s ambition to enhance its competitiveness in the upcoming season.
The Earthquakes are set to kick off their 2024 regular season with a visit to FC Dallas on February 24th. This game, scheduled for 8:30 pm ET, will be available on MLS Season Pass, offering fans a chance to see the team’s new composition and strategy in action.
Tommy Thompson’s continued presence with the Earthquakes marks a significant moment for the club, as it retains a homegrown player with a deep understanding of the team’s ethos and history. His experience and versatility will be crucial as San Jose looks to make a strong impact in the 2024 MLS season.
