CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs have bolstered their catching depth by claiming Brian Serven off waivers from the Colorado Rockies. The addition of Serven brings the Cubs’ 40-man roster to a total of 38 players.
Brian Serven, 28, is a seasoned player with a solid minor league track record. Over the course of his seven seasons with the Rockies’ farm system, he has compiled a .240 batting average, with 75 doubles, six triples, 49 home runs, and 180 RBI. His on-base percentage stands at .310. He earned recognition as a 2018 MiLB.com Organization All-Star with High-A Lancaster.
Serven’s major league tenure began with the Rockies on May 18, 2022, where he played 62 games in his debut season, achieving a .203 batting average with notable power, including six home runs. He demonstrated his batting potential early with two home runs in his second major league game.
In the 2023 season, Serven saw limited action due to stints on the injured list but managed to participate in 11 games. His Triple-A performance in Albuquerque last year included a .199 batting average with five doubles and five home runs.
The Palm Desert, California native, and Arizona State University alum was initially drafted by the Rockies in the fifth round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft. The Cubs are looking forward to Serven’s contributions both behind the plate and with the bat as they prepare for the upcoming MLB season.
