In a commanding display at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, Finland secured a 6-0 victory over Germany, largely thanks to the exceptional performance of Emma Ekoluoma. The 17-year-old forward from Karpat Oulu scored her second hat-trick in as many games, marking an impressive debut in the tournament.
Ekoluoma’s achievement puts her on the cusp of equalling a record set by Haley Skarupa of the USA in 2012, who scored hat-tricks in her first three games. However, Ekoluoma faces a formidable challenge in her next game against defending champions Canada.
Despite the lopsided score, Germany showed commendable resilience, especially following their 11-0 loss to Canada. Goalie Hannah Loist was a standout performer, making several significant saves to keep the Finnish team at bay for extended periods.
Finland took an early lead with Erika Kannkkunen setting up Senja Siivonen for the opening goal. While Finland dominated possession and shots, Germany’s defense, led by Loist’s efforts, managed to hold off further scoring for much of the game. Loist’s agility was particularly notable in a save against Eerika Siekkinen.
Ekoluoma’s first goal came late in the first period, followed by her completing the hat-trick in the third period, capitalizing on Finland’s power plays. Abigail Byskata also contributed significantly with two goals, one assisted by Ekoluoma.
Finland’s victory sets them up for a crucial matchup against Canada to determine the top spot in Group A. For Germany, the loss means they must win against Czechia to avoid finishing fourth in the group.
Ekoluoma’s standout performance underscores her potential as a rising star in women’s hockey. As the tournament progresses, Finland will look to leverage her scoring prowess, particularly in their upcoming game against Canada. Germany, on the other hand, will aim to bounce back against Czechia, showcasing the competitive spirit they have demonstrated despite their losses.
