FLUSHING, N.Y. — The New York Mets have fortified their outfield by signing Gold Glove winner Harrison Bader to a one-year contract. Bader, a New York native, brings exceptional defensive skills and speed on the bases, having stolen a career-high 20 bases last season.
In 2023, Bader divided his time between the New York Yankees and the Cincinnati Reds, appearing in 98 games. He is recognized for his superior defensive metrics, ranking in the 80th percentile or above in several categories, including fielding range and arm strength.
David Stearns, the Mets President of Baseball Operations, expressed excitement over the new acquisition: “Harrison has continually distinguished himself as one of the best defenders in baseball and can help us win games in a variety of different ways.”
Bader, 29, won his first career Gold Glove Award in 2021 and has been a leading defensive player in the majors since 2018, leading in runs prevented and outs above average. His defensive prowess is further highlighted by his ranking in ultimate zone rating (UZR) and defensive runs saved.
The Bronxville native, an alumnus of Horace Mann School and the University of Florida, was Pete Alonso’s college teammate. Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2015, Bader has played seven seasons in the majors and will now bring his talents to the Mets, aiming to make an impact both in the outfield and as a base-running threat.
