ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays have strengthened their infield options by acquiring José Caballero from the Seattle Mariners, sending outfielder Luke Raley in return.
Caballero, 27, showcased his speed on the bases with 26 stolen bases during the 2023 season, a figure that not only ranked him second among American League rookies but also as the third-highest in Mariners rookie history. His impressive success rate of 89.7 percent on steal attempts was one of the best in the league.
The Panama City native, originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2017, joined the Mariners in 2019 through a trade. Over the past season, he achieved a .221 batting average, contributing nine doubles, one triple, four home runs, and 26 RBI over 104 games.
Raley, 29, brought power to the Rays’ lineup last season with 19 home runs, 23 doubles, and 49 RBI. His 2023 campaign marked his first Opening Day roster inclusion, although it was cut short due to a cervical strain injury in late September.
The exchange reflects the Rays’ strategy to bolster infield depth and speed on the bases, while the Mariners gain a power-hitting outfielder in Raley, who will look to bounce back from last season’s injury. Both players are set to bring new dynamics to their respective teams in the upcoming season.
