ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — In a thrilling overtime contest, the Orlando Magic secured a 117-110 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, led by Paolo Banchero’s stellar 35-point performance. Rookie Caleb Houstan also shone brightly, contributing a career-high 25 points in the Sunday night matchup.
Magic coach Jamahl Mosley praised Banchero as “a winner” and Houstan as “a machine.” These accolades were well-earned as Banchero scored Orlando’s first six points in overtime, complementing his total with 10 rebounds. “He’s a winner. He’s going to find a way to help the team win,” Mosley said about Banchero, who has been averaging 32.3 points in Orlando’s last six games.
Houstan, showcasing his long-range prowess, was 7 of 14 from beyond the arc in his first start of the season. “We talk about the next man up. I’m just trying to stay ready when my name is called,” he commented on his performance.
Atlanta’s Trae Young led his team with 31 points and nine assists, while Dejounte Murray added 24 points and Bogdan Bogdanovic contributed 18 points. Despite their efforts, the Hawks fell short, partly due to missing 12 free throws and losing out on second-chance points, with a 25-6 deficit.
Hawks coach Quin Snyder emphasized the importance of rebounding after missed shots. “Players are going to make shots, but when they miss we’ve got to clean up the glass,” he stated.
The Magic’s advantage on the boards was significant, with Banchero, Goga Bitadze, and Cole Anthony combining for a 57-50 edge in rebounds.
Markelle Fultz made a return for Orlando, playing for the first time since early November due to a knee injury. Despite not scoring in his 10 minutes, Fultz’s presence was a positive sign for the Magic. “We got a win so I couldn’t be happier,” said Fultz, focusing on the long-term vision for the team.
The Hawks’ night was marred by the loss of Garrison Mathews to an ankle injury in the first quarter. Additionally, two key replay reversals late in the game went in favor of the Magic, including a changed call that led to a block on Clint Capela instead of a charge on Banchero in overtime.
Looking ahead, the Hawks will face Philadelphia at home on Wednesday night, while the Magic will host Minnesota on Tuesday night.
