DENVER, CO — The Colorado Rapids have made a significant acquisition, signing US men’s national team midfielder Djordje Mihailovic from Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar. Mihailovic, who previously played in MLS with Chicago Fire FC and CF Montréal, will join the Rapids as a Designated Player.
Under the terms of the deal, Mihailovic is contracted through 2027, with an option for 2028. The Rapids have reportedly paid a club-record transfer fee exceeding $3 million for Mihailovic. Additionally, the club has compensated FC Cincinnati with $75,000 in General Allocation Money for his discovery rights.
Pádraig Smith, Rapids president, expressed high expectations for Mihailovic, noting, “Djordje is an exciting, skillful player with a proven track record of success in MLS and at the international level.”
Mihailovic’s MLS career includes an impressive tally of 20 goals and 36 assists across 134 regular-season appearances. His standout performance at Montréal led to his initial transfer to AZ Alkmaar for over $6 million. However, his stint in the Dutch league saw limited success, prompting his return to MLS.
USMNT coach Chris Armas praised Mihailovic’s abilities, emphasizing his competitive nature and play-making skills. “He has the personality and intensity needed to excel with our style of play,” said Armas.
In Colorado, Mihailovic will join a talented midfield lineup, including homegrown player Cole Bassett, Connor Ronan, Portugal youth international Sidnei Tavares, and recent free agency addition Omir Fernandez.
The Rapids, now entering the Chris Armas era, are set to kick off their season on February 24 against the Portland Timbers. The signing of Mihailovic, along with the acquisition of USMNT goalkeeper Zack Steffen from Manchester City, signals the club’s strong ambition for the upcoming MLS season.
