The Chicago Cubs have officially agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Shōta Imanaga on a four-year major league contract. The deal, which is a significant move for the Cubs, adds a strong arm to their rotation. However, the terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Imanaga, aged 30, joins the Cubs after eight seasons with the Yokohama Bay Stars of the Japan Central League. He boasts an impressive record of 64-50, including 13 complete games and seven shutouts, with a solid 3.18 ERA in 165 games. His performance is further highlighted by his 1,021 strikeouts against 280 walks, contributing to a 1.12 WHIP.

In his last three seasons since 2021, Imanaga has held a 23-13 record. Notably, he was a pivotal figure in last year’s World Baseball Classic, earning a win for Japan in the final against the United States.

The signing of Imanaga is seen as a replacement for Marcus Stroman, who became a free agent after opting out of his contract with the Cubs. The team’s roster now includes lefty Justin Steele and right-handers Kyle Hendricks and Jameson Taillon, with Imanaga expected to play a significant role in the rotation.

The Cubs, under the leadership of newly hired manager Craig Counsell, narrowly missed the playoffs in the 2023 campaign. With Imanaga’s addition, the team looks set to bolster its pitching lineup and improve its chances in the upcoming season.

While specific financial details of the contract remain undisclosed, it is expected to be substantial, reflecting Imanaga’s standing as a prominent pitcher. The deal reportedly includes player/team options and escalators that could increase its value significantly.

Shōta Imanaga’s signing with the Chicago Cubs is a major development for the team, as they aim to strengthen their pitching staff and make a more substantial impact in the upcoming MLB season. His experience and proven track record in Japan’s Central League and international competitions like the World Baseball Classic make him a valuable addition to the Cubs.
