PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Flyers clinched a 3-2 shootout win against the Montreal Canadiens at Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday, with newly acquired defenseman Jamie Drysdale making an impactful debut.
Drysdale, who joined the Flyers in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks, set up Morgan Frost’s second-period power-play goal and recorded two shots on goal in his first game. His contribution was a bright spot for Philadelphia, which has struggled with a disappointing season so far. The Flyers improved their record to 21-14-6, finding a much-needed victory at home.
Sean Couturier scored the only goal in the shootout, providing the decisive edge for Philadelphia. Owen Tippett also scored for the Flyers, while Samuel Ersson made 17 saves and stopped all three shots in the shootout, playing a crucial role in the win.
Montreal, on the other hand, faced challenges despite an early lead. Sean Monahan and David Savard scored for the Canadiens, and Cayden Primeau made 37 saves. However, the team’s effort wasn’t enough to secure a win. The Canadiens’ Josh Anderson reflected on the need for more consistent play throughout the game.
Philadelphia managed to tie the game at 2-2 in the second period, thanks to Frost’s power-play goal from Drysdale’s pass. This marked the third straight game the Flyers scored a power-play goal, showing signs of improvement in an area where they have struggled this season.
The Canadiens initially led the game with Monahan and Savard’s goals in the first period. However, the Flyers’ resilience paid off as they fought back, with Tippett narrowing the gap to 2-1.
Flyers coach John Tortorella praised the team’s speed and direct approach, which he felt were crucial in overcoming the hard-playing Canadiens.
With this win, the Flyers end their home stand on a high note before heading out for a three-game road trip.
In notable stats, Justin Barron of the Canadiens earned his first point in nine games with an assist, and Tippett scored in two consecutive games after a seven-game drought.
The Flyers’ next challenge will be on the road, as they look to build on this victory and climb higher in the standings.
