ATLANTA — In a dramatic overtime showdown, the Atlanta Hawks secured a 139-132 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night. The win was particularly significant for the Hawks, improving their home record to 6-9 and marking a positive turn in their season.
Jalen Johnson played a crucial role in the Hawks’ victory, hitting two key free throws in overtime, followed by a decisive 3-pointer with just 39 seconds left. Johnson’s performance was remarkable, totaling 25 points, 16 rebounds, and seven assists.
For the 76ers, Tyrese Maxey shined with 35 points, nine assists, eight rebounds, and four steals. However, his night ended prematurely after fouling out with 1:44 left in overtime. The 76ers, playing without Joel Embiid, felt his absence keenly as they suffered their third consecutive loss.
Philadelphia’s Tobias Harris stepped up with 32 points, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win. The Hawks, on the other hand, saw significant contributions from Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, scoring 28 and 25 points respectively.
Both teams had to adapt due to injuries. The 76ers’ Embiid, the reigning NBA MVP, missed the game with knee swelling, and Paul Reed started in his place. The Hawks were without their starting center, Clint Capela, due to right Achilles tendon soreness, with Onyeka Okongwu stepping up in his absence.
Okongwu made the most of the opportunity, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. De’Andre Hunter of the Hawks was also sidelined due to knee inflammation.
The 76ers are hopeful for Embiid’s return in their next game against Sacramento, while the Hawks will continue their homestand against the Indiana Pacers. Both games are scheduled for Friday night.
