DALLAS — The Dallas Stars delivered a dominant performance, defeating the Minnesota Wild 7-2 at the American Airlines Center on Wednesday. The victory was particularly significant as it spoiled the NHL debut of Wild goaltender Jesper Wallstedt.
Nils Lundkvist emerged as a key player for Dallas, scoring a goal and an assist. His contribution was vital, as it marked his first goal of the season in his 30th game. Esa Lindell and Mason Marchment also played crucial roles, with Lindell notching three assists and Marchment adding two.
The Stars’ win completed a home-and-home set sweep against the Wild, with a combined score of 11-2, including a 4-0 victory at Minnesota on Monday. Goalie Scott Wedgewood was solid between the pipes for Dallas, making 21 saves.
For the Wild, the night was challenging. Despite Matt Boldy’s efforts with a goal and an assist, Minnesota struggled to find its rhythm. The 21-year-old Wallstedt, making his first NHL appearance, faced a tough test and ended the night with 27 saves.
Dallas took control early, with Joe Pavelski opening the scoring in the first period. The Stars continued to dominate, particularly in the second period, outshooting the Wild 16-3. Roope Hintz, Matt Duchene, and Jason Robertson were among those who contributed to the scoreboard for Dallas.
Minnesota’s attempts to rally were evident, with Boldy cutting the deficit to 3-1 early in the third period. However, Dallas quickly regained control, with Lundkvist and others extending the lead.
Wild forward Mats Zuccarello acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, noting that they didn’t make Dallas work hard for their goals. Defenseman Jake Middleton also highlighted the team’s failure to execute their gameplan effectively.
The Stars’ victory was a showcase of their offensive prowess, becoming the first team this season to have at least four players with 15 goals. Ryan Suter also had a noteworthy night, contributing an assist and finishing plus-4 in ice time.
This win adds to Dallas’ impressive record against Minnesota, extending their point streak to 10 games dating back to December 2021.
Looking ahead, both teams will aim to build on this game’s lessons, with the Wild especially keen on bouncing back from this tough defeat.
