ATLANTA, GA., January 11, 2024 — Atlanta United has strengthened its defensive ranks by signing Norwegian international center back Stian Gregersen. The 28-year-old joins from French second-division side Bordeaux, under a contract that extends through the 2027 MLS season, with an option for 2028.

Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra expressed his confidence in Gregersen’s abilities, noting his consistent performances across different leagues and his adeptness in various defensive scenarios. Bocanegra emphasized Gregersen’s game-reading skills, commanding presence, and leadership qualities that are anticipated to bring organization and resilience to Atlanta United’s backline.

Gregersen brings a wealth of experience to the MLS, having tallied eight goals and four assists over 229 career professional appearances. His tenure at Bordeaux, which began in 2021 after a significant period at Molde FK in Norway, has honed his talents at an international level. With eight caps for Norway, including appearances in World Cup qualifiers and friendlies, Gregersen has proven his mettle on the international stage as well.

The Norwegian defender is expected to form a robust defensive partnership with Peru international Luis Abram, following the departure of Miles Robinson, who was a pivotal figure for Atlanta United from 2019 to 2023, and has now joined FC Cincinnati in free agency.

Atlanta United, led by head coach Gonzalo Pineda, is set to commence their 2024 campaign with a challenging match against the defending MLS Cup champions, Columbus Crew, on February 24. The acquisition of Stian Gregersen is a clear indication of Atlanta United’s intent to shore up their defense as they seek to make an impactful run in the upcoming MLS season.
