Atlanta United FC has officially signed center back Derrick Williams through the 2025 MLS season, with an option for 2026. This move comes after the club selected the rights to Williams in the 2023 MLS Re-Entry Draft last month.

Derrick Williams, aged 30, brings a wealth of experience to Atlanta United. He began his professional career in the Premier League with Aston Villa in 2012, before moving to Bristol City in League One the following year. Williams played a pivotal role in helping Bristol City earn promotion to the Championship during the 2014-15 season.

In 2016, he joined Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, where he made 152 total appearances. His extensive career in England includes more than 250 combined appearances in League One and the EFL Championship.

Williams entered MLS in 2021, initially signing with LA Galaxy. In two seasons with Galaxy, he made 44 starts in 47 appearances. In the 2023 season, Williams joined D.C. United, making 21 starts in 24 appearances and scoring his first MLS goal against FC Cincinnati.

Internationally, Williams has represented Ireland’s national team. He made his senior debut in 2018 in a friendly against France and scored a goal in a friendly against New Zealand in November 2019. He holds dual citizenship in Ireland and the United States, which means he will not occupy an International Roster spot at Atlanta United.

Atlanta United’s Vice President and Technical Director, Carlos Bocanegra, praised Williams for his tough, no-nonsense defending style, and his extensive experience in England and MLS. Bocanegra emphasized Williams’ understanding of the league and physicality, which will provide additional options in the club’s back line.

Williams joins Atlanta United as they prepare for their 2024 campaign, starting on February 24 against the defending MLS Cup champions, Columbus Crew. With the addition of Williams, Atlanta United strengthens their defense as they navigate multiple competitions this season.
