MIAMI – In an NBA rarity, the Miami Heat secured a win without reaching the 100-point mark, defeating the Orlando Magic 99-96 on Friday night. This feat, uncommon in today’s high-scoring league, marked the first such victory since the Houston Rockets beat San Antonio on December 11.

Duncan Robinson led the Heat with 23 points, while Bam Adebayo delivered the crucial go-ahead jumper with just 18.5 seconds left. Adebayo’s performance was key, contributing 21 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. Jaime Jaquez Jr. also played a significant role, adding 19 points for Miami.

For Orlando, Paolo Banchero finished with 25 points, eight rebounds, and six assists but missed three crucial attempts in the game’s final moments. Moe Wagner scored 19 points, with Chuma Okeke and Joe Ingles contributing 16 and 14 points, respectively. However, Orlando’s struggles at the free-throw line, going 12 for 20, played a part in their defeat.

The game’s low-scoring nature was an anomaly in the current season, with NBA teams having a 7-107 record when scoring under 100 points. Both teams had contrasting records in sub-100-point games prior to this matchup.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and Magic coach Jamahl Mosley reflected on the nature of the game, with Spoelstra acknowledging the fan enjoyment of such a contest and Mosley emphasizing the learning experience for his young team.

The Heat were without several key players, including Jimmy Butler, Kyle Lowry, and Tyler Herro due to injuries. Orlando also faced absences, with Franz Wagner and Wendell Carter Jr. sidelined, and Jalen Suggs limited due to illness.

This win sees Miami continue its dominance against Southeast Division opponents, maintaining an unbeaten record in division games. The Heat look forward to their next game against Charlotte on Sunday, which will include a ceremony for Dwyane Wade’s Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement.

The Magic, facing a challenging road trip, will next visit Oklahoma City on Saturday, aiming to bounce back from this close loss. The game highlighted the Heat’s resilience and ability to secure wins despite scoring challenges and key player absences.
