MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Paul George’s exceptional performance, scoring a season-high 37 points, propelled the Los Angeles Clippers to a 128-119 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night. George’s efficiency, connecting on 12 of 18 shots and hitting 7 of 10 from 3-point range, was crucial in his sixth game this season scoring at least 30 points.
Kawhi Leonard, fresh off signing a three-year contract extension, added 22 points, shooting 10 of 16 from the field. Clippers coach Tyronn Lue praised George’s rhythm and expressed a desire for him to take even more shots, given his current form.
Amir Coffey also contributed significantly with 13 points, perfect from the field, as the Clippers shot an impressive 55% overall. Despite the win, Leonard noted areas for improvement and the need for more consistent play.
Memphis was led by Jaren Jackson Jr., who scored 21 points, while Xavier Tillman matched his career high with 20 points and nine rebounds. David Roddy added 17 points for the Grizzlies. However, Desmond Bane, scoring 15 points, left the game in the third quarter with a sprained left ankle, adding to Memphis’ injury concerns.
Coach Taylor Jenkins of the Grizzlies, already dealing with multiple injuries, acknowledged the challenging situation but remained optimistic about the team’s future prospects. The severity of Bane’s injury was not immediately clear.
Memphis’ injury woes were compounded by the absence of leading scorer Ja Morant, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery, and backup point guard Marcus Smart, out for six weeks with a finger injury.
The Clippers capitalized on the Grizzlies’ depleted lineup, particularly in the second quarter, where they outscored Memphis 42-27. Their shooting performance in the period was exceptional, contributing to a 65-53 lead at halftime.
Lue attributed the victory to the team’s ability to win in different ways, highlighting George’s scoring and James Harden’s playmaking with 11 points and nine assists.
The Clippers, now fourth in the Western Conference, have won eight of their last nine games. The Grizzlies, facing a tough injury situation, continue to navigate a challenging season.
Looking ahead, the Clippers will face Minnesota on Sunday, while the Grizzlies host the New York Knicks on Saturday. The Clippers’ recent form and depth have been key to their success, while the Grizzlies will aim to overcome their injury struggles and maintain competitiveness in the league.
