SAN ANTONIO – Victor Wembanyama’s remarkable night with 26 points and 11 rebounds propelled the San Antonio Spurs to a dominant 135-99 win against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday. His efficiency from the field, including 2 of 3 from the 3-point line, and his defensive presence with two blocks in just 20 minutes, were pivotal in the Spurs’ convincing victory.

The game also marked the return of Hornets star LaMelo Ball after a 20-game absence due to an ankle injury. Despite Ball’s impressive stats of 28 points, five assists, and five steals, it wasn’t enough to counter the Spurs’ overall team performance.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich praised his team’s growing understanding and chemistry, which was evident in their 31 assists and consecutive wins for only the second time this season. The Spurs’ starters were able to rest in the final quarter, indicating their control over the game.

Wembanyama, however, will not be playing against the Bulls in the Spurs’ next game as the team continues to manage his minutes following a sprained ankle in late December. His cautious approach to recovery reflects the team’s long-term vision for his contribution.

The Hornets, still missing key players like Gordon Hayward, P.J. Washington, and Mark Williams due to injuries, struggled to find their footing against the Spurs’ offense. Ball’s return also drew attention to his “LF” tattoo, which he played without covering for the first time since the rule prohibiting commercial logos on players’ bodies.

For the Spurs, Doug McDermott, Jeremy Sochan, and Devin Vassell made significant contributions to the team’s scoring. Popovich noted the solid performances on both ends of the floor.

The game was expected to be a showdown between top draft picks Wembanyama and Brandon Miller, but an injury to Miller early in the second quarter dampened the anticipation. Wembanyama responded to criticism about not getting the ball enough, emphasizing his unconventional playing style and the team’s adjustment to it.

The Spurs’ victory highlighted their potential when firing on all cylinders, while the Hornets continue to navigate challenges with their roster. The Hornets will next face Miami on Sunday night, and the Spurs host Chicago on Saturday night.
