Atlanta, Jan 14, 2024 – The Washington Wizards, led by Kyle Kuzma’s 29 points, snapped a six-game losing streak and claimed a resounding 127-99 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. This win, their largest of the season, also improved their road record to 4-18.
Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. praised the team’s performance, highlighting their energy and creativity on both ends of the court. The Wizards’ defense was particularly effective, holding the Hawks to a season-low 34% shooting from the field and ending Atlanta’s streak of scoring at least 100 points in 94 consecutive games, the third-longest in NBA history.
Trae Young, the Hawks’ leading scorer, managed 21 points but struggled with his shooting, making only 6 of 19 attempts. The Hawks, who had previously dominated the Wizards in their season matchups and had a six-game winning streak against them, were visibly off their game, trailing by 28 points at the end of the third quarter. Their home record now stands at a disappointing 6-11.
Deni Avdija contributed significantly to the Wizards’ success with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists, while also playing a key role in defending Young. Jordan Poole added 20 points, bolstering the Wizards’ offensive efforts.
Hawks guard Dejounte Murray, playing through a strained hamstring, scored 11 points, ending his streak of six consecutive games with 20 or more points. His performance comes amid trade speculation as the NBA’s Feb. 8 trade deadline approaches.
On a cold night in Atlanta, the Hawks’ shooting was equally cold. The Wizards, despite ranking last in the NBA in points allowed per game, stifled the Hawks’ offense, which is usually among the league’s best. The first half was particularly challenging for the Hawks, who shot only 31% from the field and 28% from behind the 3-point line.
The Wizards capitalized on the Hawks’ struggles, extending their lead in the third quarter with a decisive 24-11 run. Coach Unseld emphasized the importance of maintaining aggression and not allowing the Hawks any chance of a comeback.
Both teams look ahead to their next games, with the Wizards hosting the Pistons and the Hawks set to play the Spurs on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
