Washington – The Washington Capitals mounted a remarkable comeback in the third period to clinch a 3-2 victory against the New York Rangers at the Capital One Arena on Saturday. Key goals from T.J. Oshie and Nic Dowd, scored just 1:53 apart, were instrumental in reversing the game’s fortunes.
Dowd’s equalizer at 6:36, off a tip from an Evgeny Kuznetsov shot, set the stage for Oshie’s game-winning goal at 8:29, assisted by Dylan Strome. Oshie’s performance was particularly noteworthy, as he has now scored two goals in three games after a slower start to the season.
Anthony Mantha also contributed with a goal for the Capitals, and goalie Charlie Lindgren made 25 saves. The Capitals, who had been struggling with three losses in their last four games, managed this win without star forward Alex Ovechkin, sidelined due to a lower-body injury.
Adam Fox scored both goals for the Rangers, displaying his scoring prowess with his seventh goal this season and fourth in four games. However, Jonathan Quick’s 18 saves were not enough to secure a win for New York, which has now lost four straight games and five of six in January.
The Rangers initially led 1-0 in the first period, thanks to Fox’s goal. Mantha then tied the game for Washington, but Fox’s second goal in the second period put New York ahead again until the Capitals’ late rally.
Both teams will face each other again in a quick turnaround, playing at Madison Square Garden in New York on Sunday.
This game highlighted the Capitals’ resilience and ability to capitalize on opportunities, especially in the third period. The Rangers, meanwhile, will look to address their defensive issues and capitalize on their offensive chances in their upcoming rematch against Washington.
