Pesce’s Overtime Heroics Lift Hurricanes Over Penguins in 3-2 Thriller

Raleigh, N.C. – Brett Pesce emerged as the hero for the Carolina Hurricanes, scoring twice including the game-winning goal in overtime, to secure a 3-2 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PNC Arena on Saturday. This win extends the Hurricanes’ point streak to eight games, with a record of 7-0-1 in this span.

Pesce’s decisive goal came at 1:41 of overtime, following a skillful backhand pass from Teuvo Teravainen. His earlier goal in the first period had given the Hurricanes an initial lead. Jordan Martinook also scored for Carolina, while goalie Antti Raanta made an impressive 38 saves, contributing significantly to the team’s success.

The Penguins, despite trailing 2-0, rallied in the third period with goals from Jake Guentzel and Bryan Rust. Guentzel’s goal, assisted by Sidney Crosby, and Rust’s equalizer, coming late in the game, showcased Pittsburgh’s resilience. Goalie Tristan Jarry, with 32 saves, played a crucial role in keeping the Penguins in the game.

Carolina’s coach Rod Brind’Amour acknowledged the talent on the ice and the game’s high-scoring opportunities. Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan expressed concern over the odd-man rushes allowed by his team, especially in the first period.

The Hurricanes took control early with Pesce’s initial goal and Martinook’s follow-up, capitalizing on Pittsburgh’s defenseman Chad Ruhwedel’s clearing attempt. The Penguins’ comeback in the third period set the stage for the dramatic finish in overtime.

Raanta’s performance, including a notable glove save on Crosby, was pivotal for the Hurricanes. His 38 saves marked his most in three seasons with the team.

This victory underscores the Hurricanes’ ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities and maintain a lead. For the Penguins, the late-game rally and point earned show their competitive spirit, despite the loss.

The Hurricanes’ success in scoring from their defensemen, with 30 goals this season, was highlighted, second only to the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche. The win also continued Carolina’s home winning streak against Pittsburgh, dating back to March 2019. The Penguins, on the other hand, will look to address their defensive issues in future games.
