Andrew Copp’s decisive goal with just 1:40 left on the clock led the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena, extending their point streak to six games. Copp’s goal, assisted by Michael Rasmussen, was the turning point in a closely contested game.

Dylan Larkin played a crucial role for the Red Wings, contributing a goal and an assist. Detroit’s performance was particularly impressive considering their delayed arrival at Scotiabank Arena, only 90 minutes before the puck drop, due to weather and mechanical issues. Despite these challenges, the Red Wings displayed remarkable resilience, as acknowledged by coach Derek Lalonde.

James Reimer, facing his former team, made 28 saves in his first start since late December. His performance was highlighted by Larkin as the best of the year. The Red Wings also dealt with the loss of forward Patrick Kane, who left the game with a lower-body injury in the first period.

The Maple Leafs, led by coach Sheldon Keefe, struggled to find their offensive rhythm. Mitchell Marner and Pontus Holmberg scored for Toronto, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win. Ilya Samsonov, recalled from the AHL, made 20 saves for Toronto but couldn’t prevent the late goals from Detroit.

Toronto’s power play opportunities in the first period went unconverted, setting a tone for the rest of the game. Marner’s goal was a milestone, marking his 600th NHL point, the fastest in Maple Leafs history.

Daniel Sprong tied the game for Detroit early in the third period, setting the stage for Copp’s late heroics. Lucas Raymond added an empty-net goal to seal the 4-2 victory for Detroit.

Reimer reflected on the special nature of the night, emphasizing the team’s ability to overcome adversity. For the Maple Leafs, the loss added to their challenges, as they also missed forward Bobby McMann due to injury.

The Red Wings’ victory showcased their determination and ability to perform under

pressure, while the Maple Leafs will look to address their offensive issues and power-play inefficiencies. The game was a testament to Detroit’s grit and team effort, demonstrating their capability to secure wins even in challenging circumstances.
