Igor Shesterkin’s outstanding 24-save performance was crucial in helping the New York Rangers snap a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 win against the

Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden. Artemi Panarin and Alexis Lafrenière were the goal scorers for the Rangers, who improved their record to 27-13-2.

The Rangers, who had lost six of eight since December 29, including a 3-2 defeat in Washington on Saturday, played a stronger defensive game, as noted by Lafrenière. T.J. Oshie scored for the Capitals, with Charlie Lindgren making 29 saves in his second consecutive start. Despite the loss, the Capitals were impressive on the penalty kill, going 5-for-5.

Panarin opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the game with a spectacular one-timer, continuing his excellent form with 11 goals in his past 13 games. Lafrenière doubled the lead with a goal off his own rebound with 50 seconds left in the first period, his first since December 27.

The Capitals, who fell to 20-15-6, saw a glimpse of hope when Oshie scored in the second period. However, Shesterkin, bouncing back from a tough couple of games, made key saves to preserve the Rangers’ lead, including a crucial stop on Evgeny Kuznetsov in the dying seconds.

Rangers coach Peter Laviolette praised Shesterkin’s performance, acknowledging its importance in building something new for the team. The Capitals missed star forward Alex Ovechkin due to a lower-body injury.

Panarin’s goal marked his 400th point with the Rangers, making him the fastest player in team history to reach the milestone. Kaapo Kakko returned for the Rangers after missing 21 games, contributing with two shots on goal.

The Rangers’ victory was a much-needed boost, highlighting their potential when both their offense and defense click. The Capitals, despite the loss, showed resilience and will look to bounce back in their upcoming games.
