New York City FC (NYCFC) has officially signed Austrian winger Hannes Wolf from Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach, bolstering their attack ahead of the 2024 MLS season.

The 24-year-old Wolf, who has amassed impressive experience in Europe’s top leagues, is set to join NYCFC on a deal running through the 2027 campaign, with an option for 2028. His arrival in New York is contingent upon the receipt of his ITC and P-1 Visa. The Austrian national brings a wealth of experience from playing in the Bundesliga, Champions League, and Europa League.

David Lee, NYCFC’s sporting director, expressed excitement about Wolf’s addition, highlighting his creativity, versatility, and strong defensive work rate. Wolf’s ability to play across several attacking positions is expected to be a significant asset for the team.

Wolf’s journey to NYCFC has been marked by notable achievements. He emerged as a standout player at Red Bull Salzburg, scoring 22 goals and providing 22 assists in 89 appearances, including impressive performances in the UEFA Europa League. After his time at Salzburg, Wolf moved to RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga and had a loan spell at Swansea City in the English Championship. His time at Mönchengladbach, however, was less impactful, partly due to injuries, including a meniscus tear that required surgery in October 2023.

At NYCFC, Wolf joins a team seeking to improve upon their 11th-place finish in the Eastern Conference last season. The club’s goal is to return to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and compete for championships. Wolf is expected to contribute significantly to this ambition with his experience and talent.

Wolf’s signing is particularly timely given the uncertainty surrounding Talles Magno, a key player in NYCFC’s attack, who is reportedly seeking a transfer. Wolf’s presence adds depth and quality to the team’s attacking options, making him a potential key player for the upcoming season.

As NYCFC prepares for the new season, starting on February 24 at Charlotte FC, fans and the club alike will be eager to see how Wolf integrates into the team and contributes to their quest for silverware.
